Lenox is located in southwest Iowa, around 140 km east of the Missouri River , which forms the border with Nebraska . The border with the neighboring state of Missouri to the south is around 25 miles from Lenox.

The city's history began in 1871 when a line of what was then the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was built here. Four years later the city was incorporated as an independent municipality.
