Leo Weber (born March 9, 1876 in Riedholz , Canton Solothurn ; † March 7, 1969 in Solothurn , resident in Riedholz) was a Swiss educator .

Life

Family and education

Leo Weber's parents were tenants of a small farm in Riedholz . His father Johann was a trained stone cutter , his mother Luise (nee Meister) came from a Thaler "schoolmaster dynasty". Leo Weber was accepted into the pedagogical department of the Solothurn Cantonal School , and in 1895 he obtained a teaching certificate there . From 1897 to 1900 he devoted himself to secondary teaching studies at the University of Bern and in Paris , and later he completed an extra-occupational course in pedagogy and psychology at the University of Basel .

In 1908 Leo Weber converted from the Roman Catholic to the Christian Catholic Church. In January 1909 he married Marie Sophie, widowed Trautmann, the daughter of the privateer Johann Ineichen. Their children Lilly and Leo were born as twins on October 19, 1909 in Basel , where the family lived at the time . Leo Weber junior should also turn to pedagogy and became director of the Pedagogical Institute of the University of Zurich .

Leo Weber died in March 1969, two days before he would have turned 93, in Solothurn .

Professional background

Leo Weber initially held teaching positions in Breitenbach and Deitingen , in 1901 he changed to Biberist in his own capacity , and in 1908 to the St. Johann daughter's school in Basel . In 1911 he was hired to teach German and history at the Solothurn Cantonal School, and from 1914 he was employed as a school inspector . In 1918 he was appointed director of the Solothurn seminar. In 1946 Leo Weber was officially retired.

Weber, who also worked as an editor of educational periodicals , including Der Fortbildungsschüler , emerged in particular as an author of reading books and studies on school history. Together with the Aargau pedagogue Arthur Frey and the Solothurn writer Josef Reinhart , Weber developed the “Swiss Reading Book”, which has been reprinted again and again since the 1920s. The “General Edition” was used for the schools in the cantons of Solothurn , Aargau, Basel-Landschaft and Thurgau and was last published in 1959 in the 9th edition. Separate editions were published for the cantons of the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Bern . The writer Otto Feier describes the spirit of the two volumes of the “Swiss Reading Book” in his Weber biography as “humanism rooted in his home country”. Leo Weber also organized training courses for work teachers and kindergarten teachers.
