Leopold Clemens Karl of Lorraine

Leopold Clemens Karl of Lorraine (born April 25, 1707 in Lunéville , † June 4, 1723 in Lunéville) was a Hereditary Prince of the House of Lorraine. His father was the ruling Duke of Lorraine. His mother came from the House of Bourbon, which ruled the Kingdom of France at the time. After the death of his older brother in 1711, Leopold Clemens became hereditary prince, but died of smallpox at the age of only 16 .
Life
Leopold was born as the third son of Leopold von Lothringen and Élisabeth Charlotte de Bourbon-Orléans in Lunéville Castle . His eldest brother Leopold (1699–1700) died at the age of 8 months. Another three siblings died of the outbreak of smallpox in Lunéville: Elisabeth Charlotte (1700–1711), Maria Gabriele Charlotte (1702–1711) and Ludwig (1704–1711). In the same year, the smallpox epidemic also killed the Grand Dauphin Ludwig von Bourbon and the Roman Emperor Joseph I.
Early on, Leopold was prepared for his future role as the ruling Duke of Lorraine. This included a military career that was closely aligned with the allied imperial family. In 1716, when he was 9 years old, he took over the ownership of an imperial regiment ( "Old Lorraine" ).
In 1722 Leopold became Duke of Teschen , which his father received as compensation for the Duchy of Montferrat in northern Italy , the Emperor Karl VI. ceded Savoy to his allied duchy .
In 1723 he was sent to Vienna to work at the imperial court under the supervision of his father's cousin Charles VI. to be educated. But the dynastic marriage policy also founded the trip. The alliance between the houses of Habsburg and Lorraine was to be strengthened by marrying Archduchess Maria Theresa .
After returning to Lunéville in the meantime, the smallpox epidemic that broke out there demanded him. He quickly succumbed to her.
Leopold was buried in the ducal tomb in the Saint-François-des-Cordeliers church in Nancy .
His next younger brother Franz became the new Hereditary Prince and later husband of Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria.
