Leopold friend

Leopold Freund (born April 5, 1868 in Miskowitz, today Miscovice / Okres Kutná Hora , near Prague , † January 7, 1943 in Brussels ) was an Austrian radiologist.

Live and act

Leopold Freund studied medicine in Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1895. In 1904 he qualified as a professor in medical radiology and in 1914 became titular professor for this subject at the University of Vienna . Freund is considered to be the founder of medical radiology and X-ray therapy .

With the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895 and the following year with the discovery of radioactivity by Antoine Henri Becquerel and the first use in patients by Leopold Freund in Vienna, the basis for radiation therapy was created.

Leopold Freund also published fundamental work on light treatment of occupational diseases and the use of X-rays to inspect building materials.

Freund, who was Jewish, emigrated to Belgium in 1938 after the annexation of Austria .
