Leopold Rost OSB (born September 8, 1842 in Vienna ; † July 6, 1913 there ) was an Austrian Benedictine and abbot of the Vienna Schottenstift .

Life

Rust, the son of a butcher , came after the visit of the Vienna Schottengymnasiums 1861 in the Scots Abbey and graduated in Theology at the University of Vienna . After his ordination in 1866, he was initially a cooperator in Zellerndorf , from 1868 in Pulkau and from 1872 in Schottenfeld . In 1873 he became curate and preacher in the Schottenstift. As a pulpit speaker he was very much appreciated; some of his sermons appeared in print. Rost was pastor in Höbersbrunn from 1883 to 1887 . In 1887 Abbot Ernest Hauswirth appointed him prior of the monastery, and from 1895 he was also pastor of the monastery parish .

After Hauswirth's death, Rost was elected abbot of the Schottenstift in 1901 . As such, he initiated the rebuilding of the parish church of Enzersfeld and the renovation of the churches of Gaunersdorf , Stammersdorf and St. Ulrich . In the monastery itself he acted as a patron of the arts and sciences. He increased the collection of paintings in the monastery and supported the publication of the catalogs of the incunabula and the collection of Roman coins of the monastery by Albert Hübl . Outside of the actual monastic events, he was involved in the preparations for the 23rd World Eucharistic Congress , which took place in Vienna in 1912.

Rost's services have been recognized by numerous awards and honors. Among other things, Rost was an honorary citizen of numerous parishes and an imperial council, as well as a commander with the star of the Franz Joseph Order .
