Leopold Schott

Leopold Schott , Hebrew Juda-Löb Schott ( June 27, 1807 in Randegg - January 20, 1869 in Bühl ) was an author and district rabbi in Baden .

Life

Leopold Schott was the son of the master shoemaker Aron Schott. He initially studied for four years at the yeshiva in Hechingen and continued his Talmudic studies in Karlsruhe with Rabbi Ascher Löw for another four years. From 1824 to 1827 he also attended the Lyceum in Karlsruhe. On May 6, 1829 matriculated he at the University of Heidelberg , and in 1833 he passed the state examination for the rabbi Oberrat . First, he was teacher of religion in Randegg and 1833 there rabbinate locum tenens , where he finally received in 1837 the office of the rabbi. He worked for the magazine for the religious interests of Judaism (ZRIJ) from 1844 to 1846. From 1849 he also became a conference rabbi at the Upper Council of the Israelites of Baden. Leopold Schott was one of the most progressive reformers in the religious conference of the Upper Council, among other things he campaigned for the introduction of the organ in the synagogue . In 1852 he became rabbinical administrator in Gailingen and from April 20, 1855 until his death, district rabbi in Bühl. He was married to Sara, born Randegger (1808–1889), daughter of Rabbi Mayer Randegger in Trieste . Leopold Schott was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Bühl.
