Life
Leopold was the son of the Jewish merchant Simon Lämel (1766–1845) and Babette Duscheness. The father was raised to the hereditary-Austrian hereditary nobility as a nobleman of Lämel on December 5, 1811 in Vienna "because of the promotion of Commerzes" with his descendants . Leopold Edler von Lämel was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd class on February 23, 1856, in accordance with the statutes, in addition to the Austrian hereditary knighthood on April 17, 1856 in Vienna .
Lämel married Rachel Sophie Freiin von Eichthal (1790–1861) from Munich on August 22, 1815 in Leimen (Baden) , the youngest daughter of the Jewish court factor Aron Elias Seligmann (1747–1824), who was later baptized and was named “ Freiherr von Eichthal ”was raised to the Bavarian baron class. The couple had three daughters, Marie, Auguste and Julie. With Leopold Lämel, the male line became extinct. His nephew was the Jewish wholesaler and banker Eduard Wiener von Welten in Vienna.
Lämel, known as a philanthropist during his lifetime and head of the Jewish religious community, was considered the head of the industrial upper middle class in Prague. As a kuk Hofaktor , he was one of the major financiers of the Austrian state.
In 1825 he was a co-founder of the Bohemian Savings Bank in Prague and at the same time became one of its directors. He later became director of the Austrian National Bank in Prague. In Vienna he was one of the founders of the Credit-Anstalt für Handel und Gewerbe , the forerunner of today's Creditanstalt-Bankverein .
In 1841 he founded one of the first worsted spinning mills in Bohemia in Prague with 2,000 spindles and 500 hundredweight annual production.
After the death of his father Simon (1845) he took over the wholesaling company founded in 1787. Through several banking transactions for Goethe , father and son Lämel were very well acquainted with the poet, which is clear from Goethe's diaries.
After the end of the revolution of 1848 , during which he had campaigned for peaceful coexistence, he was elected to the wider municipal and inner city council of Prague. He was later elected to the Bohemian state parliament as a member of the German party.
In 1856 Lämel applied together with the Princes Metternich , Windischgrätz and Thurn und Taxis for the concessions for a railway line from Prague via Pilsen and Taus to the Bavarian border and others from Pilsen to Budweis and Karlsbad . But he could not raise the necessary money.
