Leroy Theodore Matthiesen

Leroy Theodore Matthiesen (born June 11, 1921 in Olfen , Texas, † March 22, 2010 in Amarillo ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Amarillo . He became known as a political and social activist.

Life

Leroy Matthiesen studied at the Josephinum Pontifical College in Worthington, Ohio. The Apostolic Delegate to the United States, Amleto Giovanni Cicognani , ordained him a priest on March 10, 1946 . He then studied at the Register College of Journalism in Denver. Since 1948 he was editor of the "West Texas Register". From 1948 to 1958 he was also active as a pastor in Amarillo, from 1958 press officer of the Diocese of Amarillo. In 1961 he completed a postgraduate Masters in Education at the Catholic University of America (CUA) . From 1961 to 1967 he was rector of the St. Lucian Seminary in Amarillo.

He was appointed Bishop of Amarillo by Pope John Paul II on March 18, 1980 . The Archbishop of San Antonio , Patrick Fernández Flores , ordained him episcopal on May 30th of the same year; Co- consecrators were John Louis Morkovsky , Bishop of Galveston-Houston and Thomas Joseph Drury , Bishop of Corpus Christi . His resignation was granted on January 21, 1997 by John Paul II.

Matthiesen was a long-time member of the Catholic Press Association . He was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference (NCRLC) from 1985 to 1988 and a member of the Board of Directors of the United States Bishops' Conference (USCCB) from 1989 to 1995 and a member of the American Board of Catholic missions . He was a member of the board of directors of the Ascension Academy in Amarillo, chaplain for the local order of the Poor Clares, and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Texas.

Act as an activist

He was committed to peace and disarmament as well as other social conflict issues. Among other things, he campaigned for the suspension of the death penalty for a murderer of a Catholic nun and for the admission of homosexuals to the sacraments. In 1981 he called on the Catholic workers at the Pantex plant, the 65 km² assembly plant for all atomic bombs and nuclear warheads in the USA, to resign.

Matthiesen appeared on the cover of Life Magazine in 1982 . In 2009 he received the Teacher of Peace Award from Pax Christi USA .
