The Pontifical College Josephinum ( en . : Pontifical College Josephinum ) is the only Pontifical College outside of Rome . It was founded as a seminary in Columbus (Ohio) in 1888 and elevated to a papal college in 1892.

history

Joseph Jessing , who came from Münster in Westphalia , emigrated to the United States of America in 1867 . He began his priestly formation at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary in 1868 Cincinnati ( Ohio ) and in 1870 for priests ordained. Together with Franciscans , he founded an orphanage that was moved to Columbus, Ohio in August 1877. In this orphanage he established the first college class on September 1, 1888; the foundation stone for the college was laid.

From the seminary to the papal college

The first grade was converted into a seminary. The priestly training was designed for six years. In June 1899, the first candidates for the priesthood were ordained . In 1894, Ohio State recognized the seminary as a college and incorporated it into school laws. The first seminarians were young men who had emigrated from Germany . Later there were also students from Eastern Europe , Asia and Africa who then served as priests in their home countries.

To ensure the continued existence of the seminary, Jessing asked the Pope to place the seminary under the auspices of the Holy See . Pope Leo XIII agreed to this request . (1878-1903) too. He subordinated the institute to the present-day Congregation for Catholic Education and appointed the Apostolic Nuncio of the United States as Chancellor of the college . In 1931 the college moved into its current building north of Columbus, Ohio. Pope Pius XI (1922–1939) confirmed in 1938 the status of the Pontifical College. A reorganization took place between 1940 and 1950. The courses were expanded and reformed. In 1958 the college was recognized as a "State College of Fine Arts " in Ohio. The high school attached to the college was closed in 1967.

Course offers

The college is divided into the Theological College and the College of Fine Arts. The courses offered in the main and minor courses consist of philosophy , English music and literature , theology , Latin , history , general sciences ( astrology , biology , physics and geology ), social science , mathematics , rhetoric , fine arts, sports ( volleyball , basketball and physical -Training ), languages (German, French and Spanish).
