She moved to New York City in the late 1990s . Headland holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University . After completing her studies, she worked for six years as an assistant for the film production companies Miramax and The Weinstein Company , including one year as Harvey Weinstein's personal assistant . This was followed by a brief position for the then Huffpost editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington .

At the same time, the first plays from the Seven Deadly Plays series were created , each of which reinterpreted a mortal sin in the context of the present. The series consists of the pieces Cinephilia ( lust ), Bachelorette ( gluttony ), Surfer Girl ( laziness ), Assistance ( greed ), Reverb ( anger ), The Accidental Blonde ( envy ) and Cult of Love ( arrogance ). They were staged in Los Angeles from 2007 by the IAMA Theater Company, where Headland was artist in residence .

Shortly thereafter, her former employer The Weinstein Company acquired the rights to the Bachelorette play . Headland wrote the script for the film based on the template and also took over the direction of it. The comedy with Kirsten Dunst , Rebel Wilson , Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher started in German cinemas in October 2012 under the title The Wedding of our Biggest Friend .

This was followed by other scripts for feature films such as Assistance (2013), which was also based on the play of the same name, as well as About Last Night (2014) and Sleeping with Other People (2015). In the latter, Headland also took over the direction of the film. Headland also directed several episodes of the TV series SMILF (2017) and Heathers (2018).

In 2019 Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler brought Headland as the third member of the team to develop the Netflix series Matryoshka . Headland, who is listed as co-creator of the show, wrote the scripts or teleplay for three episodes of the first season and directed four episodes.
