history
An inscription for the Roman / Celtic god Mars Cososus was found on a consecration tablet ( CIL ). The city's name originally comes from the Latin XIII, 1353leprosum . In the historic center of the city is the former Benedictine church of Saint-Sylvain, which was built in the 13th century. The organ case from 1502 is considered the oldest in France. As early as the 9th century, the St. Sylvain Monastery in Levroux only took in sick people with rot .
The fortifications were approved by King Charles VII in 1436 and surround the historic old town. The ruins of the castle of the Lords of Levroux are dated to 990.
Levroux is located on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela and was a well-known pilgrimage stop in the Middle Ages.
