Catch and Release ( catch and release ) is an American film comedy by Susannah Grant from the year 2006 .

Grady, Gray Wheeler's fiancé, dies in an accident. He will be buried on the day the wedding should take place. At the funeral, Gray witnesses Grady's former best friend Fritz having sex with a waitress. Gray is horrified and insults Fritz. After the funeral, Gray learns from a lawyer that Grady has not made a will and that she cannot inherit his property. Because she can no longer afford the house that she previously shared, she moves out.

Gray is staying with Grady's closest friends Sam and Dennis, who have also taken in Fritz. She takes care of the liquidation of Grady's accounts and comes across an unknown account for over a million dollars. The interest on this account was regularly sent to a woman in Los Angeles. Having become suspicious of Grady's old cell phone ringing and the messages left on it, she confronts Fritz and learns that Grady has an illegitimate son, Maureen Monette, whom he supported financially and who was in the brief affair before the relationship with Gray was conceived.

Suddenly Maureen shows up with her three year old son Mattie. She found a motel nearby and is looking for Grady. Gray initially gets rid of them and is disappointed, because since Mattie is only four years old, the affair must have already been during her relationship with Grady. She wants to vent her anger on Fritz, but does not get around to it because she feels drawn to him and kisses him. He then tells her everything he knows about Grady's affair. One day, Gray unexpectedly meets Maureen in the common house. After the initial tensions have subsided and everyone has got to know each other better, Sam offers the two newcomers space in the house as well. Gray is unsure of her feelings about Fritz, but eventually she begins an affair with him. Dennis, who has long been in love with Gray, reveals himself to Gray, who, however, does not return his feelings. She doesn't want to hurt him and claims that she has no feelings for Fritz. Fritz overhears this conversation, packs his things and goes back to Los Angeles .

Meanwhile, Grady's mother doubts that the boy being supported is really her son's biological son. When after a DNA test it turns out that Grady is not the father, Gray goes to Grady's mother and stands up for the boy; she gives her the engagement ring in return for continued support. Grady's mother returns the ring and hands Monette a check.

The days after Grady's funeral go by, and everyone copes with his death in their own way. Sam has started a relationship with Maureen and is a great help to the single mother. Dennis finally finds peace and is proud of his garden. Gray travels to Fritz. The two find each other again.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was "confused" and "incoherent". Only a few scenes are "effective" and "touching". Almost every attempt to show humor has failed; Jennifer Garner is miscast.

The film was in Boulder ( Colorado ) and Vancouver rotated. It had its world premiere on October 20, 2006 at the Austin Film Festival . The film grossed approximately $ 15.27 million in US cinemas at an estimated $ 25 million production cost .
