The Church of Our Lady on Säben is a Roman Catholic sacred building in South Tyrol . It is located near the Säben monastery above Klausen . She is consecrated to Mary or to Our Lady , the mother of Jesus. While the actual church dates back to the 17th century, the structurally attached Marienkapelle (also known as the Chapel of Grace) dates back to the Middle Ages.

history

The Liebfrauenkirche follows on from early Christian traditions at its location : a baptistery already stood in this area in the 6th century . This was built over in the Middle Ages with a Lady Chapel, which still exists in parts as the southeastern extension of the Church of Our Lady. The original Romanesque stock was later redesigned in the Gothic style .

Between 1652 and 1658 (a few years before the construction of the Säben monastery a little higher on the slope), the medieval longitudinal building was built over with a baroque octagon and a choir room to the east under the direction of the parish priest Mathias Jenner . The executing builders were Giacomo and Andrea Delai .

Building description

From the western entrance, the Liebfrauenkirche presents itself as an octagonal central building . In the elevation , the main room is divided into two parts: the walls below are designed with niches , above the decorative beams there is a second octagon broken open by windows. The top of the room is completed by a dome on which there is a lantern . To the east is a short rectangular choir room, which is surmounted on the north side by a small tower with a bell dome. In the southeast, the structurally connected Marienkapelle complements the ensemble: the short, rectangular room with a pent roof faces east to the medieval round arched apse with groin vault .

The Church of Our Lady is known for the magnificent work of the plasterers Francesco Carlone and Simon Delai as well as their frescoes. Stephan Kessler painted stucco pear-shaped fields in the dome of the octagon . These are scenes from the life of Mary based on graphics by Peter Paul Rubens .

The mannerist- influenced high altar in the choir was built in 1612 in Hans Rumpfer's workshop in Klausner and already adorned the previous church. The large, high-quality side altars in the octagon were donated by the parish priest Mathias Jenner together with his siblings in 1674. A copy of the famous late Gothic sculpture of the enthroned Madonna and Child (“Mother of Grace of Säben”) can be seen on the neo-Gothic altar of the Lady Chapel.
