Lienhard (name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lienhard is a German-speaking name.

Origin and meaning

Lienhard is an Upper German , more precisely Alemannic form of Leonhard . It is a Romance-Germanic hybrid formation from Latin leo ("lion") and Germanic hard ("kühn"). In its composite form it is a typical Germanic personal name formation and therefore means something like "bold lion".

The name is mostly used today as a family name and occasionally as a first name, and it was also used in German family names in the High Middle Ages . The family names Lienle and Liendl are short forms of Lienhard, while Lienharter is a patronymic form. Early evidence for the use as first names are the 1414 Moravian said Lienhart (Liendel) Hamer and in 1556 Konstanz mentioned Lienhart Lory .
