linuxmuster.net is a server - Distribution for the operation of educational school networks . This is developed by the association linuxmuster.net e. V. , whose seat is in Schönau in the Black Forest . It is based on the Ubuntu 18.04 Server LTS operating system from 2019.

Distribution history

Originally from the teacher training at the Ministry of Culture of Baden-Wuerttemberg developed Linux Solution has been under the umbrella of since 2003 Landesmedienzentrum Baden-Wuerttemberg developed by teachers. In July 2012, the Baden-Württemberg State Media Center announced that it would hand over the development to a company. As a result, the developer community, including the previous teachers who developed the Linux model solution, decided to start a fork of the free Linux model solution (OpenML) under the name linuxmuster.net . The name was changed in order to avoid trademark problems with Silicon Graphics International , as the owner of the trademark rights of the Open Multimedia Library .

This spin-off pursues a consistent further development and should, if possible, not be installed using a separate installation medium, but with the existing basic systems (Ubuntu, IPFire ) and receive changes (if possible) via script. An integration of subnetting / VLANs is planned for version 6.1. Samba4 will be supported in a later version instead of as originally planned in 6.1.

Communication takes place via a dedicated forum based on Discourse . Previously, it ran on a mailing list and a forum, which used the open source , PHP -based Internet newsboard program Unclassified NewsBoard (UNB). There is also the possibility of telephone support. An independent instance of Flyspray is used as a bug tracker .

The source code of the project is available on GitHub .

The final version of linuxmuster.net 6.0 was released on March 4, 2013.

The beta phase of version 6.1 started in December 2013. The innovations to be tested include bug fixes and the replacement of Samba bind mounts with Samba shares, including support for subnetting and VLANs , reactivation of Windows 7 (with LINBO 2.2.) And the integration of OPSI . With the start of the test phase, they also published so-called virtual appliances in Open Virtualization Format and for the Linux kernel infrastructure for virtualization ( Libvirt / KVM ).

Version 6.1 was completed in June 2015. In addition to the functions already included in the beta phase, the firewall was changed from MAC addresses to IP-based in order to complete the support of subnetting and VLANs in terms of security. With the help of ACLs , detailed authorizations can be assigned to the provided directories and it is also possible to roll out Linux clients with a preconfigured operating system Ubuntu 14.04.

Version 6.2 was rolled out in mid-July 2016. New features compared to 6.1 can be found primarily in the school console, LINBO and the firewall. For this purpose, the school console was revised using JavaScript and jQuery . LINBO in version 2.3. received a kernel update to 4.2. So that there is native support for 64-bit -capable hardware . Switching to GRUB 2 enables the operation of UEFI clients . The update of the IPFire firewall is now carried out by the server using the script . linuxmuster-ipfire

The latest version linuxmuster.net 7.0, code name Bond, will be released on April 17th, 2020.

Server 6.2

Linuxmuster.net is based on an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server . After a beta phase that began in October 2012 , version 6.0 developed under the code name ObenBleiben , the final version was published on March 4, 2013. Version 6.1, developed under the name Babo , began the public beta test in December 2013 and reached its final status after a year and a half of development in June 2015. The subsequent version 6.2, code name babo62 , began the beta phase in June 2016 and ended with the final version being made available on July 15, 2016.

society

With the establishment of linuxmuster.net e. V., whose headquarters are in Schönau in the Black Forest , has been a non-profit association since January 27, 2013, with which the work of the project can be supported.

organization

The association has the general assembly and the board as organs . There are also five departments (as of October 2013).

financing

The association receives financial means from the contributions of full members or sponsoring members.

Award

linuxmuster.net took second place at the Thomas Krenn Award in March 2019. The project received the Comenius EduMedia Award , also known as the Comenius EduMedia Seal. To this end, the Society for Education and Information (Berlin) awarded two seals in June 2019, once for the project itself and for version 6.2, which was current at the time of the award.
