Up to version 2.3 the system is based on the Linux distribution SUSE Linux ; from version 3.0 on Debian . From version 6.0, which was released in August 2014, the system is based on UCS @ School .

Distribution history

The sample solution is part of an educational school server system that is developed and sold from version 3.0 under the name paedML (formerly sample solution of the state of Baden-Württemberg ) on three operating systems (Debian, Novell's Open Enterprise Server and Windows Server 2003 ). An essential part of the Linux sample solution is the principle of self-healing workstations (SheilA), which was implemented up to version 3.0 using Rembo / mySHN. A damaged system can be easily and safely restored on restart. As of version 4.0, Rembo5 / Tivoli and the free open source product LINBO , which was developed by the Knoppix authors, can be used as an alternative .

The model solution was awarded the Comenius seal of the Society for Education and Information (Berlin) in 2006, 2008 and 2010 . Since 1995, this seal has been awarded to multimedia projects that are of particular value in terms of content, education and design.

In February 2007, paedML was registered as a word mark at the German Patent and Trademark Office and entered into the register in March 2007. It was published in April 2007. Since then, paedML has been protected as a trademark and can be found in the official database of publications and registers under the number “30708010”.

The entire paedML product , consisting of software and support, could only be obtained from schools in the state of Baden-Württemberg for around one and a half years from mid-2008.

As a pure open source solution, the Landesmedienzentrum Baden-Württemberg provided the free Linux sample solution or OpenML for download, in which all non-free parts (mySHN, Rembo, Tivoli) and the layout of the school console administration interface were removed. This version of the model solution was maintained by a developer community and contained the free LINBO developed by the Knoppix authors as an image system for the self-healing workstations. Instructions for installation and use were still to be found in the LML's TracGuide, even if an official fork of the free Linux sample solution now existed with linuxmuster.net .

Version 5.1 was released in May 2012.

The state media center announced in July 2012 that it would outsource the previous development of paedML Linux to a company. With the announcement, she also released the previous teachers on the development team from their obligation within the framework of the deputation hours assigned to the LMZ for the secondment.

Deviating from the original roadmap, the state media center announced after a three-hour symposium at the end of September 2012 that it would use the Univention Corporate Server @ school from Univention GmbH as the basis for paedML Linux. The contract for development should also be awarded to the company. An integration of the imaging system LINBO in future versions was unclear. The first beta versions of the “new” paedML Linux were planned for the 2013/2014 school year (summer 2013).

On February 26, 2013 Univention GmbH announced the partnership with the state media center. The state media center informed the public on March 4, 2013 (with the publication of the Univention press release) about the partnership.

The Central Development Group for Networks (ZEN) announced the further development at the end of March 2013. One component was the change of the operating system from Ubuntu 10.04 to Debian 6 of the supplied client in the second quarter of 2013. In addition, MediaManager School , a central server and database-supported application for managing media from the online distribution platform SESAM , should appear in the third quarter of 2013 . By Media Manager School get teachers and students access to the collected media in the educational system.

On July 8, 2014, the Baden-Württemberg State Media Center and Univention presented paedML Linux 6.0 to IT school service providers and the public. It was published in August 2014. Since then, it has been delivered exclusively as a package for a virtual server . Instead of iptables and IPCop , the firewall pfSense from the FreeBSD environment is now used. What is special about UCS is that it offers an "Active Directory" with Windows group guidelines for the clients. In addition, OPSI replaces the previously used LINBO for software distribution (silent installations) of workstations. With Errata 2, a major update was released on July 14, 2015 that brings the server software and other components up to date.

Since the announcement in July 2012, the developer community has been working on a fork of the free Linux sample solution (OpenML) under the name Linuxmuster.net . The name was changed to avoid trademark problems with the company Silicon Graphics International , as owner of the trademark rights of the Open Multimedia Library .

This spin-off is a consistent further development and should, if possible, not be installed using a separate installation medium, but rather with the existing basic systems ( Ubuntu , IPCop, later IPFire ) and should receive changes if possible via script. An integration of subnetting / VLANs was planned for version 6.1.0. Samba4 was only supported in a later version.

Communication on issues relating to the server solution takes place via a dedicated forum based on Discourse . Previously, it was initially via a mailing list and a forum that used the open source , PHP -based Internet newsboard program Unclassified NewsBoard (UNB). An independent instance of Flyspray is used as a bug tracker .

The source code of the project is available on GitHub .

With the establishment of linuxmuster.net (e.V.), an association has existed since January 27, 2013, with which the work of the project can be supported.

The final version of Linuxmuster.net 6.0 was released on March 4th, 2013.

The beta phase of version 6.1 started in December 2013. The innovations to be tested are bug fixes and the replacement of Samba bind mounts with Samba shares, support for subnetting and VLANs . With the start of the test phase, they also published so-called virtual appliances in Open Virtualization Format and for the Linux kernel infrastructure for virtualization ( Libvirt / KVM ).

After around one and a half years of development, version 6.1 was completed in June 2015. In addition to the functions already included in the beta phase, the firewall was changed from MAC addresses to IP-based. In addition, detailed authorizations for the provided directories can be assigned through ACLs and it is also possible to roll out Linux clients with a preconfigured Ubuntu 14.04 operating system.

Version 6.2 was delivered in mid-July 2016. New features compared to 6.1 can be found primarily in the school console, LINBO and the firewall. For this purpose, the school console was revised using JavaScript and jQuery . LINBO in version 2.3. received a kernel update to 4.2. So that there is native support for 64-bit -capable hardware . Switching to GRUB 2 enables the operation of UEFI clients . The update of the IPFire firewall is now carried out by the server using the script . linuxmuster-ipfire

linuxmuster.net took second place at the Thomas Krenn Award in March 2019. In June 2019, the Society for Education and Information (Berlin) again awarded the Comenius-EduMedia-Award for the version 6.2., Which was current at the time of the award, another seal to the project itself.

distribution

The Linux sample solution was used by around 800 schools in Baden-Württemberg in February 2013. According to a communication on customer development published in February 2016, around 600 schools used paedML Linux, including around 200 schools the school server developed by Univention.
