The place on the banks of the Main was first mentioned in 1216 and came to the Brandenburg margraves in 1448 . In the 18th century, the Häckerdorf with a fortified church developed into a transshipment port and trading center for the Ansbach Margraviate on the Main, and in 1726 it was elevated to a market. Even if the construction of the city, planned in 1712, was still in its infancy, this heyday is still vivid in the townscape. Around the old fortified church, along the main street and the Herrnstraße leading away from the Main, the larger houses of the families who have become prosperous in trade are lined up, while towards the Main, the former quarter of the workers and craftsmen employed in the port extends with regulated living quarters. The lower area of the Herrnstrasse, which rises slightly, has some town houses from the 18th and early 19th centuries. In its further course, agricultural courtyards follow, the houses of which face the gable side of the street. The church district is located on the corner of Hauptstrasse and is surrounded by a closed row of two-storey eaves side houses from the first half of the 19th century, mostly over an older core. The entrance to the churchyard leads through the town hall tower. The main street has a village character in its central area, but continues to the south in a regularly laid out section that documents the new founding of the town in the 18th century. Here is a uniform row of houses (no. 34–44) in the simple, classifying forms of the Ansbach late baroque. The port, which was crucial for the development of the town and was built between 1711 and 1729, resulted in a systematic expansion of the settlement between the old town and the port basin. The rows of houses and squares with small, regularly parceled out one- and two-story houses for fishermen, dock workers and craftsmen are, although of varying degrees of preservation, a unique testimony to the mercantilist aspirations of the 18th century.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
