Ensembles

Ensemble old town Miltenberg

The ensemble ( location ) includes the Mildenburg area with the core city and its two inner extensions from the 14th century, as well as the main axis of the eastern suburb of the 15th century to the Würzburger Tor, including the Engelplatz and the vertical axis from this axis The branches of the Ankergasse, Unteren Walldürner Strasse and Ziegelgasse, each formerly closed by gates, with their buildings, and the east-facing buildings on Fabrikstrasse. The areas between these secondary axes of the eastern suburb, the former walling of which has been preserved in small remnants, as well as the entire outer western suburb between the remains of the Schwertfeger Gate and the isolated spire tower, which towers near the train station, have lost their historical structure to such an extent that they can no longer be assigned to the ensemble.

At the top of an arch of the Main , on a ledge of the Greinberg, the Archbishops of Mainz built the Mildenburg in the first half of the 13th century in the course of their rule expansion in the Main Valley . Located in a strategically favorable position above the narrow bank with its old thoroughfare, the facility was expanded as a Mainz base against the Freudenberg Castle of the Bishops of Würzburg , which was built upstream in 1225 . At the foot of the Mildenburg, where the ore monastery set up a customs post around 1230, a castle settlement with market and stacking rights developed, which quickly took on the character of a town.

The oldest core town stretched westward from the market square to the former Oberamtshof; it was fortified and connected to the castle fortifications by side walls. The narrowness of the topographical situation forced a small market square that also had to use the narrow, rising area of the Schnatterloch to the south. The rapid development of the city required extensive expansions to the east and west, parallel to the Main, which were also made under the constraint of the small width of the bank. The first eastern suburb extended to the former central gate at the entrance to Engelplatz, and the first western suburb extended to the former Schwertfegertor on Bahnhofstrasse. Both were fortified and connected to the core city, which was already known as the old town in 1417. Starting from the castle, the eastern fortification walls and half-towers are completely preserved, with the largest part of the moat on the castle side, larger parts on the east side and mostly built over, while the main side only has the drinking and cooling gates; the west side, protected on the mountain side by the steep slope, was only surrounded by fortifications along the Main, of which almost nothing has survived.

In its expansion, which was reached at the end of the 14th century, the city reveals itself as a street settlement, from the main axis of which there are barely noticeable short, narrow side streets; only the Riesengasse is an exception. The small size of the individual parcels makes this small division clear again. At the beginning of the 15th century, the city was expanded to the east and west for the second time. The development was extended to an extraordinary length up to the Würzburger Tor and the pointed tower, fortified and brought into the city; Both tall buildings have been preserved and document the main entrances to the historic city, the latter now isolated. The plan structure of the outer eastern suburb shows much more spacious planning than the older urban areas. Engelplatz was also created here, where the Franciscans with church and monastery settled in 1630, as a planned and only larger square in the city.

The internal development of Miltenberg is characterized by the extraordinarily large number of preserved half-timbered houses from almost four centuries, which make the town appear largely wooden. They illustrate the prosperity of merchants, artisans, boatmen and fishermen in the late Middle Ages and in the 16th century; their often carved timbers, the chalk-white infills and the slate-covered steep saddle or mansard roofs are characteristic of Miltenberg.

The rich half-timbered buildings on the market square combine with the castle towering above and the market fountain to form a unique and famous picturesque picture. The dominant building along the inner main street is the parish church of St. Jakob from the late 14th century, which only received parish rights in 1522; it only gained its appearance with the pair of twin towers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In addition to it, through their monumentality and design, some buildings such as the former Mainz department store, the former Oberamtshof, the former cathedral winery and the district court represent the city rule that ended in 1803.

Individual baroque town houses and residential buildings from the 19th century, mostly in red sandstone, set their own accents, but mostly fit into the cityscape. Boundaries: Schlossgasse - Castle District (outer slope-side fortification walls), Hauptstraße 213-301 (odd numbers, southern slope-side property boundaries), Bahnhofstraße 1–25 (odd numbers, southern slope-side property boundaries), Mainstraße (inner city-side street line from the former Schwertfegertor at Bahnhofstraße 25 eastwards to the confluence of Ziegelgasse), Ziegelgasse 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, Engelplatz 60, Hauptstraße 1–58 with Ankergasse 1–20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and with Fabrikstrasse 1–13 (odd numbers). Engelplatz 59–69, Untere Walldürner Straße 1–19 (odd numbers), Burgweg / Conradyweg (from Burgweg 38 westwards along the outer city moat and Schnatterloch). File number: E-6-76-139-1.

City fortifications

The growth of the medieval city based on the preserved remains of the individual sandstone walls from the 13th to 15th centuries. Century clearly legible, demolition of the fortifications from the end of the 18th century to the second half of the 20th century, the first city fortification of the 13th century in the form of two side walls leading down from the Mildenburg to the Main, partly still in the later extensions of the castle and preserved along individual parcels of houses, the first urban expansion of the 14th century, especially in the east south of the main road, preserved in some great heights, city wall with battlements over brick round arches interrupted by several square shell towers, the preserved slate hipped roofs of the towers from later times, the Schnatterlochturm ( 1453 d), the so-called 'blue cap' with half-timbered tower (1604 d), the north-eastern round tower with a conical point from the 20th century and two wall riders with crenellated wreaths, from the first city expansion in the west only a tongue wall from the former sword sweeper's gate with newly covered wall rider and a part overbuilt by residential buildings The second city expansion of the 15th century can only be grasped in the west through the preserved Mainz gate tower, in the east the second city expansion in the form of longer walls with the remains of two semicircular shell towers and the round Zuckmantelturm (marked 1451) as a southeast corner tower and finally, culminating in the Würzburg gate tower, the city wall on the side of the river has more or less merged into the houses with overbuilt remains of the cooling and drinking gates. Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
