List of the Counts of Artois
The list of the Counts of Artois lists the owners of the rulership of the medieval French feudal territory Artois .
The historical province of Artois emerged from the old Roman pagus Atrebatensis , named after the Belgian tribe of the Atrebats , which belonged to the West Franconian Empire since the Franconian division of Verdun in 843 . In the early 10th century, the Artois was contested between the powerful Counts of Flanders and Vermandois , although Flanders was able to establish itself permanently in the region in 932.
On the occasion of her wedding to King Philip II in August 1180, Isabella von Hainaut received the Artois from her uncle, Count Philip I of Flanders , as a dowry. After Isabella's death in 1190, her inheritance passed to her son, the underage Crown Prince Louis VIII the Lion . His father got into protracted disputes with the Counts of Flanders over the ownership rights to the Artois, in the Treaty of Péronne (1200) the king finally ceded the north of the Artois to Flanders. Prince Ludwig forced Countess Johanna to surrender the affected area in 1212 , but it was only after the Battle of Bouvines in 1214 that he could finally secure his mother's inheritance for himself.
With the accession to the throne of Louis VIII in 1223, the Artois was united with the crown domain. But in his will from 1226 Louis VIII decreed the enfeoffment of his younger son Robert with the Artois, which took place in 1237.
