Margaret of France († 1382)

Margaret of France (* around 1312, † 9. May 1382 ) was a French princess from the dynasty of the Capetian . By marrying Ludwig I , she was Countess of Flanders from 1322 and, after the death of her husband in 1346, ran government as the guardian of her son Ludwig von Male . Due to the death of her childless relative Philipp von Rouvres in 1361 she also became Countess of Artois and Free Countess of Burgundy .

Life

Margarete was born as the second daughter of the future French king Philip V and his wife, Countess Palatine Johanna von Burgund , Countess of Artois . According to the agreements of the Treaty of Paris , Margaret was married on July 21, 1320 to Louis I , the later Count of Flanders, Nevers and Rethel . The connection should the freshly made peace between Ludwig's grandfather, the Flemish Count Robert III. , and seal Margarete's father Philipp.

After her husband died in the Battle of Crécy in 1346 , she took on political responsibility and was the driving force behind the marriage of her son Ludwig von Male in 1347 to Margarete von Brabant, the daughter of the Brabant duke Johann III. After her son mature had become, she cared for adherence to the Franco-Flemish Alliance. She was also active as a mediator between her son and the rebellious Ghent, but was unable to resolve the dispute throughout her life.

When the grandson of her older sister Johanna , the Burgundian Duke Philip of Rouvres, died childless in 1361, she inherited the Free County of Burgundy and the County of Artois. In her capacity as Countess of Artois and Burgundy, she played a major role in the marriage between her granddaughter Margaret of Flanders and the Burgundian Duke Philip the Bold in 1369 .

After her death on May 9, 1382, Margaret of France was buried in the tomb of the French kings, the Basilica Saint-Denis in Paris .
