List of mayors of the city of Nuremberg
This article covers the First Mayor and Lord Mayor of Nuremberg since 1818.
history
The office of “First Mayor” has only existed since 1818. Until 1806 the city was ruled by the so-called “Inner Council”, whose members were elected from the patriciate . After the end of the imperial city period and the transition of Nuremberg to the newly founded Kingdom of Bavaria , which was ruled by the Wittelsbachers , in 1806, the "Inner Council" continued its activity as the "Royal Magistrate " until November 1808, albeit without a real one Competence .
The actual head was since 1803 the Bavarian military governor for the Franconian districts, General Friedrich Karl von Thürheim , or the royal Bavarian police director Christian Heinrich Clemens Wurm appointed by him , who eliminated the patrician city regiment until 1808. According to the Bavarian municipal edict of 1808, a municipal council characterized by trade and merchants was elected in 1810, against the resistance of the patricians. In 1811 the new council was installed.
After a few years of mutual blockade, the police headquarters and the municipal council were dissolved according to the municipal edict of 1818. They were replaced on the urban side by the magistrate as the administrative authority and the college of municipal representatives (town council), on the state side by the town commissioner. The office of the First Mayor was established.
From 1907 the term “Lord Mayor” was used instead of “First Mayor”.
