The office of President of the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera dei deputati ) has existed in the Kingdom of Sardinia since the beginning of the Chamber of Deputies .
Giuseppe Biancheri held this office the longest, as he was chairman of the Chamber for over 18 years from 1870 to 1907. Nilde Iotti was both the first woman in this office and the first woman in the three highest state offices (President of the Republic, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies; until then these offices had always been given to men). Iotti was President of the Chamber of Deputies for twelve years, making this office the longest in the republic. Irene Pivetti (Lega Nord), the second woman after Iotti, was the youngest person to officiate, elected in 1994 at the age of only 31.
Oscar Luigi Scalfaro (DC) had a short term in office, who left his post after just one month because he was elected President of the Republic. Gronchi (DC), Leone (DC), Pertini (PSI) and Napolitano (PDS) also became presidents of the republic (Gronchi had just resigned when he was elected to the highest office in the state). The Social Democrat Giuseppe Saragat, President of the Constituent Assembly , was also elected to the highest office in the republic. Giovanni Leone was the only President of the Chamber of Deputies who was also Prime Minister and State President .
