By far the largest agglomeration in Laos is the capital Vientiane with a population of 646,522 (as of January 1, 2005). This means that twelve percent of the country's population is concentrated in the capital region.
The table lists the cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, the results of the census of March 1, 2005 and March 1, 2015, and the higher-level administrative unit ( province , special zone, prefecture ) to which the city belongs. The population figures refer to the actual city without the suburbs.
