List of stumbling blocks in Plauen

The list of stumbling blocks in Plauen includes the stumbling blocks that were laid by Gunter Demnig in Plauen as part of the art project of the same name . They are intended to commemorate the victims of National Socialism who lived and worked in Plauen. The first stumbling block was laid for Julius Brandeis on April 8, 2009. Two more stones followed on the same day. In a second action on June 18, 2011, fifteen more memorial stones were installed.

Legend

  • Image: shows a picture of the stumbling block
  • Address: indicates the street and house number where the stumbling block is located and the location on a map
  • Person: gives the name of the person to whom the stumbling block is dedicated.
  • Inscription: reproduces the inscription of the stumbling block. All the words are written in capitals on the stumbling block . In order to ensure better readability, it was omitted in the table (except for the name).
  • Laying: indicates the time of laying the stumbling block
  • Information: provides more information about the person to whom the stumbling block is dedicated.

06/18/2011 Wilhelm Selowsky was the owner of a women's fashion store. He should be forced by the Nazis to give up his trade and to emigrate. That is why he was brought to Buchenwald after the pogrom night in 1938 . After his release in 1938 he committed on December 6 suicide .

06/18/2011 Eugen Fritsch was a well-known regional representative of the labor movement and a member of the textile workers' union. In Plauen he was chairman of the SPD , city councilor and editor of the "People's newspaper for the Vogtland". After he warned of the emerging fascist danger, he was taken into protective custody in April 1933 and taken to Zwickau prison. While in custody, he received his appointment to the Saxon state parliament , to which he formally belonged from mid-June. At the instigation of the NSDAP Gauleiter Martin Mutschmann , however, he was not released, but transferred to the Hohnstein concentration camp. There he was beaten to death on September 8, 1933.

06/18/2011 Irma and Martin Herzfeld owned a leather goods shop. They had to give this up after the Nuremberg Laws came into force . They were crammed into the Judenhaus at Karlstrasse 10 with other Plauen Jews. On September 8, 1942, they were brought to Theresienstadt in a collective transport . On October 19, 1944, Irma Herzfeld was finally brought to Auschwitz and murdered there.

06/18/2011 Gertrud Goldberg was a trained kindergarten teacher and did the office work in the Jewish community until it was forcibly closed. She had to live with her parents, David and Julie Präger, in the Judenhaus at Karlstrasse 10. Her husband was able to flee to the south of France. The attempt to catch up with his wife failed on the one hand because of the money and on the other hand because Gertrud did not want to leave her parents. The daughter Marion came to England on a Kindertransport , where she grew up with foster parents. In 1942 Gertrud Goldberg was brought to Bełżyce in the ghetto there. After the ghetto was dissolved on May 22, 1942, the residents were deported to concentration camps. This will also have happened to Gertrud Goldberg. She was later pronounced dead, assuming the date of death June 30, 1942.

April 8, 2009 Hugo Engländer was born in Hainsfarth in 1885 and ran a company with his brother Jakob. After the pogrom night in 1938 they were brought to Buchenwald , where they were forced to give up their business. However, after they refused to leave their homeland, they were deported to Auschwitz in 1942, where they eventually died.

06/18/2011 Seimel Goldberg was the managing director of a clothing store on the corner of Neundorfer / Theaterstrasse. He and his family were able to flee to France before the pogrom night in 1938 . During the German occupation , his wife and daughters were picked up by the Gestapo , deported to Auschwitz and murdered there on. Seimel Goldberg himself is considered lost.

April 8, 2009 Selma Simon was born in Mannheim in 1870 . In 1942 she had to buy a "secure old age" in the Jewish town of Theresienstadt with the rest of her fortune . There she lived under degrading conditions. Shortly after the liberation by the Red Army , she died on May 18, 1945 as a result of her imprisonment.

06/18/2011 Rudolf Hallmeyer was born in Plauen in 1908. He joined the Communist Youth Association and in 1932 became a member of the KPD in the Plauen city council. After the Reichstag fire in 1933, he had to live underground and fought against National Socialism in various countries . On August 24, 1940, he was arrested in Berlin. After a trial at the People's Court , he was sentenced to death and executed on September 7, 1943 in the Berlin-Plötzensee prison.

April 8, 2009 Julius Brandeis, born in 1888, ran a shop in Plauen. He was the first resident of Plauen to be abducted by the Gestapo . After being mistreated by the Plauen SS , he was shot near Saalburg on March 20, 1933 .

In April 2009 the first stumbling block was laid for him in Plauen.

06/18/2011 Born on March 24, 1912, Walter Hedler joined the banned KPD in 1933 . In 1934 he was part of the party's illegal regional leadership. He smuggled in anti-fascist literature and oversaw the printing of the district newspaper in Stöckigt . On May 4, 1935, he took part in a secret meeting in Dresden that was betrayed by a Gestapo spy. Walter Hedler was shot while trying to escape.

06/18/2011 Karl Wolfsberg, the son of Sally and Lucie Wolfsberg, was a Jewish curtain manufacturer who , like all Jewish businessmen, suffered from repression after Hitler came to power . As chairman of the Jewish community in 1938 he was forced to agree to the sale of the property with the synagogue that had been destroyed during the pogrom night . On February 3, 1942, he was deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp . He died there on October 2, 1942.

06/18/2011 Peter Joel Wolfsberg was the son of the curtain manufacturer Karl Wolfsberg. He was as a toddler, with his mother after the Bełżyce the local ghetto spent. After the ghetto was dissolved, the residents were deported to concentration camps and murdered. This will also have happened to Peter Joel Wolfsberg.
