The Diesterweg-Gymnasium is a four-class high school and offers an artistic, athletic and scientific profile from the eighth grade onwards. A specialty of the upper level is the advanced art course. The school bears the name of the German educator Adolph Diesterweg .

history

In 2011 the Diesterweg-Gymnasium celebrated a week of festivities under the motto “100 years of education in our house” to commemorate the eventful school history since 1911. As early as 1908, planning began for a community school on the corner of Diesterwegstrasse and Comeniusstrasse. On May 18, 1909, the building plan was confirmed by the Plauen city council and the first installment of 590,000 marks for the start of construction was instructed. The building was opened on April 22nd, 1911 as the "Second Higher Citizens School", which at that time - as an upper elementary school - did not lead to the Abitur. The school building extended over four floors and comprised 38 classrooms, a drawing room, a handicrafts room, a teacher's room, a teacher's room and several teaching material and library rooms. The first school director was Ewald Weller, who led a total of 29 teaching staff. After the inauguration, attended by guests of honor from the city, classes began on April 24, 1911.

Since 1911 there have been several educational institutions in the school building on Diesterwegstrasse:

  • Second Higher Citizens' School (1911-1919)
  • Higher School for Girls (1912-1937)
  • Diesterweg elementary school (1919–1945)
  • Municipal high school for girls (1937–1945)
  • Diesterweg Primary School (1945–1959)
  • Secondary school for girls (1945–1949)
  • Oberschule Plauen and Diesterweg Oberschule (1949–1961)
  • Polytechnic high school "Adolph Diesterweg" (1961–1990)
  • Extended secondary school "Adolph Diesterweg" (1959–1974), Extended secondary school "Erich Weinert" (1974–1990)
  • Diesterweg High School (since 1990)

Diesterweg High School (since 1990)

On October 29, 1990, the 200th birthday of the namesake Adolph Diesterweg , the school was named "Diesterweg-Gymnasium in foundation (iG)" by the alderman Hansgünter Fleischer on behalf of the mayor of Plauen, Rolf Magerkord. The festive name consecration took place in the auditorium of the Lessing School, today's Lessing Gymnasium. Initial contacts with schools and educational institutions in Hof made the start easier. Already in the school year 1990 the Diesterweg-Gymnasium took on 9th grades again, in the school year 1991/1992 also 7th grades. During this time, a total of 80 teachers worked at the school. The first graduate class according to the new examination regulations passed the matriculation examination in 1994, and by 2011 a total of 2,500 graduates had received their Abitur certificates.

At times, the high number of pupils (more than 1,200 in the 1992/1993 school year) made it necessary for lessons to be held in a branch office. From 1992 to 1994 there was one at the Peace School. The high number of students in Plauen made a third grammar school necessary, which was founded in 1994 with the "Albert Einstein grammar school" in Westend and was given a musical profile. More than 700 students attended this school, which was located in a building on the site of the former König-Georg-Kaserne (today the administrative center). The "Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium" existed until 2003, after which it became a branch of the Diesterweg-Gymnasium until the end of the 2006/2007 school year and then closed.

In April 1994, planning began for a general renovation, which began in August 1995 and was completed in April 1998. The entire school building could already be used again in January 1998, but normal school operations with lessons in the school building took place during the construction work. The complete renovation cost a total of DM 13.5 million. The Saxon State Minister for Culture, Matthias Rößler , also took part in the ceremonial reopening of the building on Diesterwegstrasse on July 6, 1998 . As part of the general renovation, a handicapped-accessible elevator was installed and a "club cellar" was created for all kinds of events.

School profile and educational offer

The aim of the lesson is to provide an in-depth general education with the core elements of knowledge acquisition, competence development and value orientation. The general ability to study is achieved with the Abitur. Classes take place in modern specialist classrooms using a variety of methods. English is offered as the first foreign language; French, Latin and Russian are available for the second foreign language. In addition, from the eighth grade onwards, there are profile lessons in the natural sciences, artistic or sporting profile. Within the profiles, subject-related work is carried out, thus supplementing the basic lessons. The learning and method competence can be trained from the 5th grade in the subject "Learn to learn". In addition, the remedial classes in mathematics, German and English guarantee talented students, but also deficit compensation takes place. Grade 11 and 12 students can attend the Cambridge course weekly, which can be credited towards university studies. Language and study trips are offered to England and France. Physical education uses a modern three-field gym ("Kurt-Helbig-Halle") with a sports field. Football promotion groups (grades 5 and 6), the volleyball working group (grades 5 to 7) and the one-week ski excursion (grade 9) are offered. In addition, the Diesterweg-Gymnasium is successful every year in the sports competition “ Youth trains for the Olympics ” and at the “ Vogtlandspiele ”. In the fifth and sixth grades, there are also lessons in music classes with a focus on singing. A total of two choirs form the basis for a diverse choir life with annual choir camp and Christmas concerts. In grades 11 and 12 there is a subject-based basic course with the subject “Art-German-Music”. B. audio books or small film projects are developed. A specialty is the advanced art course, which is offered for grades 11 and 12. Cooperation agreements with the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau as well as the two-week internship ensure the students' professional orientation.

Every year, students of all classes successfully take part in many regional and national student competitions:

The pupils in grades 7 to 11 also participate annually in the Saxony-wide campaign “ genialsozial - your work against poverty ” and donate the wages earned in one day to social projects.

Vogtland College

As an institution for adult education , the Vogtland- Kolleg offers full-time teaching the opportunity to gain general university entrance qualification on a second educational path . Since 1997 the “adult school” has been part of the grammar school. The entry requirements for participation are completed vocational training or three years of professional activity. After a one-year introductory course, the students attend grades 11 and 12 and then take the Abitur examination.
