Scharfeneck castle ruins Upload file Scharfeneck Castle Ruins ObjectID
71095

KG location
: Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge
The castle was probably built in the 11th century, but this is not documented. Their name goes back to the Hungarian dynasty of the Scharfenecker, who were at the height of their power around 1400. At that time Scharfeneck was on the border with Austria and thus had some importance as a border castle. The Scharfeneckers died out soon after 1400, and in 1417 the castle was owned by the Hungarian king. During this time it was rebuilt based on the model of French and English castles. In 1493 the castle came into Austrian possession. In 1555, a lightning strike destroyed the keep, and the entire complex was so damaged that it subsequently fell into disrepair and was no longer inhabited.
