Friedrich Barbarossa imposes the imperial ban on Henry the Lion and smashes the duchy. The western part ( Westphalia ) falls to Philip I of Heinsberg , Archbishop of Cologne . On April 13, 1180 , Bernhard von Sachsen was again an Ascanian who was ducal to Saxony . However, both do not succeed in establishing extensive territorial rule over the areas of the old Duchy of Saxony assigned to them, so that the Archbishop can only consolidate part of the Duchy of Westphalia and the new Ascanian "Duchy of Saxony" only through the title and some imperial fiefs ( Lauenburg , Wittenberg ) is formed. In the rest of the area of the old Duchy of Saxony, several dozen other imperial directorial principalities and principalities emerged. | |||||
In 1235 the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg was created from the property of the Guelphs , which was given as an imperial fief to Otto the child , a grandson of Henry the Lion. It later developed into the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Braunschweig , which together again made up about half of the old tribal duchy. |
