history

The preserved customs houses in the Russian Congress Poland date from the first half of the 19th century. They were executed in the classicism style and often replaced wooden previous buildings that followed the shifted city limits as the cities grew. The architects included Jakub Kubicki (1758–1833), who designed the Warsaw buildings, Stefan Baliński (1794–1872) and Henryk Marconi (1792–1863) in Radom, and Franz (Franciszek) Reinstein (1792–1853) in Kalisz .

In Warsaw, 18 customs houses were built at ten locations on the city limits. As in Płock , they were available in pairs on the main roads.

In the Prussian city of Wroclaw there were also ten customs stations at the city limits, which were referred to as "barriers". The word rogatka also means a “ barrier ” in Polish . Two of these buildings from the second half of the 19th century are used as residential buildings.
