Litija (German: Littai ) is a municipality in the Dolenjska ( Lower Carniola ) region in Slovenia .
Location and population
On January 1, 2014, 15,054 people lived in the total municipality with 221 km², which consists of 106 villages and hamlets. The city of Litija has 6,420 inhabitants and is located east of Ljubljana in the Sava Valley .
The municipality was reclassified from the Statistical Region Osrednjeslovenska (Central Slovenia) to Zasavska (Lower Sava) on January 1, 2015 .

History and sights
The Sitarjevec mine was in operation here until 1965 . In the 19th century it was still one of the largest lead mines in Europe. The Illyrians , Celts and Romans already used this and operated mining. In Litija there is also a museum that explains the history of mining and that of ferry and boat operations on the Sava.
In 1882 a valuable bronze vessel, a situla , from the 6th century BC was found in the Vače district . Found. This vessel was also integrated into the coat of arms.
The monument of the people's liberation struggle by the architect Jože Plečnik is worth seeing in Litija . The grave of the conductor Carlos Kleiber is located in Konjšica .
South-east of Litija is in the neighboring village of Šmartno pri Litiji the castle Wagenberg (Bogenšperk).
