The Little Missouri River or, more popularly, Little Mo for short, is a river that flows from the Ouachita Mountains in the southwest of the US state of Arkansas into the surrounding rolling hill country.
The river is a rocky mountain river that runs through narrow, wooded gorges. It is characterized by numerous smaller waterfalls, crystal clear water and tower-like cliffs that are covered by pine trees.
Run
The Little Missouri flows generally in a north-south direction through Counties Pike , Clark, and Montgomery on the west side of the Ouachita River . It is located directly south of the Caddo River above Camden , Arkansas. The largest tributary is the Antoine River .
The river to Lake Greeson is dammed by the Narrows Dam . The upper section of the river to the lake has a gradient of 316 meters by 48 kilometers (29 miles) or just under seven meters per kilometer, which makes it attractive to canoeists . A section about seven kilometers long is designated as whitewater. This is where the Winding Stair Rapid is located , which is designated as class IV rapids on the white water difficulty scale .
The Little Missouri is good fishing grounds for rainbow trout , sunfish , black bass and other species.
The Little Missouri flows in sections through the Ouachita National Forest and the lower section runs in the Crater of Diamonds State Park . It is classified by the United States Forest Service as a " Wild and Scenic River " . The state runs the upper reaches as the "Arkansas Natural and Scenic River" .
history
During the American Civil War , a battle was fought on the Little Missouri River about 15 kilometers north of Prescott on the border between Clark Counties and Nevada Counties . This is known in the northern states as the Battle of the Little Missouri River , in the south it is called the Battle of Elkins Ferry .
