action
TV manager Katy is developing a reality TV show that she hopes will generate particularly high ratings. Six participants are asked to play Russian roulette with a revolver , the drum of which contains a live cartridge and five dummy cartridges. She offers a million dollars to each participant, but only suicide candidates come forward. Since she prefers participants who want to live, she quintuples the price.
The Federal Communications Commission is investigating the concept of the show. Meanwhile, Rex is making a documentary about Katy, and he also helps with the preparations for the show. When it starts, budding actress Jewel and Mexican Pablo catch blank cartridges. The performance artist Abalone also encounters a blank. The fourth participant, Byron, also survived, the fifth, Brad, kills himself in front of the cameras. A little later, Katy is shot by one of the spectators.
Reviews
James Christopher wrote in The Times on September 18, 2008 that the film was a "wonderfully cheeky" and "surprisingly raw" satire on reality TV . He is one of those shrill films that would be beyond the probable, but the black comedy offers "contagious pace" and "twisted logic" .
Lisa Nesselson wrote in Variety magazine October 8, 2007 that the film satisfies America's need to assimilate once offensive works like Network and Man Bites Dog in a way that makes them digestible and profitable. Guttentag disguise his views on reality TV and fame in an "exciting mockumentary form" .
backgrounds
The film was shot in Los Angeles . Its world premiere took place on April 28, 2007 at the Tribeca Film Festival , which was followed by several other film festivals. In Germany, the film was released directly on DVD in May 2008.
