biography

At the 6th party congress of the PPSh in November 1971, Gegprifti was elected as a candidate for the Central Committee (ZK) of the PPSh.

In the course of the dismissal of long-standing influential military leaders such as Defense Minister Beqir Balluku , Vice Minister of Defense and Chief of the General Staff Petrit Dume and the Chief of the Political Headquarters of the Armed Forces Hito Çako in July 1974, he himself became Deputy Minister for Defense. In this role he dealt in particular with economic resources and the management of the armed forces. Along with Hekuran Isai , Pali Miska and Qirjako Mihali, he belonged to a new generation of leaders within the party.

In June 1975 he was elected as a successor to the candidate of the Politburo of the PPSh . He held this position until the PPSh was dissolved in June 1991. In 1978 he became a member of the People's Assembly ( Kuvendi Popullor ) for the first time and was a member of it in the ninth to the eleventh electoral term.

When in April 1980 the appointment of a successor to Defense Minister Mehmet Shehu , who remained Prime Minister, was due, Gegprifti was not appointed Minister of Defense, despite his function as Deputy Defense Minister, but the previous long-time Minister of the Interior Kadri Hazbiu . This appointment was based on the decision of the First Secretary of the PPSh Enver Hoxha and Shehu, who did not want to entrust the important Ministry of Defense to the younger Vice Ministers Gegprifti, Nazar Berberi , Maliq Sadushi or Veli Llakaj .

On January 15, 1982, however, he was appointed Minister of Industry and Mining in the first government of Prime Minister Adil Çarçani . However, he only held this position until November 23, 1982. Between 1986 and 1987 he was the first chairman of the Executive Committee of the People's Council of Tirana County.

From February 20, 1987 to February 2, 1989 he was again Minister for Industry and Mining in the third government of Çarçani. Subsequently, he was again chairman of the executive committee of the People's Council of Tirana County until 1990.

In 1993 Gegprifti and nine other former high-ranking officials ( Muho Asllani , Besnik Bekteshi , Foto Çami , Hajredin Çeliku , Vangjel Çërrava , Lenka Çuko , Qirjako Mihali , Pali Miska and Prokop Murra ) were charged with enriching public funds. Because of these offenses, there was finally a court in Tirana to the following sentences to prison terms : Mihali and Gegprifti eight years Miska and Çuko each seven years Cami, Çeliku and Bekteshi of six years and Çërrava, Murra and Asllani five years.

In July 1996, Gegprifti, Çuko and Irakli Vero and others were charged again for their activities as first secretaries of the PPSh in Tirana, Lushnja and Fier counties . In September 1996 the court sentenced Gegprifti to 20 years, Vero to 16 years and Çuko to 15 years imprisonment. The six other defendants also received prison sentences of between 15 and 20 years. The Supreme Court of Albania upheld these convictions in November 1996.
