Lola Falana (born September 11, 1942 in Camden , New Jersey ) is an American singer , dancer and actress .

Life

Falana is the daughter of Afro-American and Cuban parents; In 1964 she played on the side of Sammy Davis Jr. in the musical Golden Boy . She then went on tour through Italy as a singer and dancer . Their reputation there also resulted in a handful of films. After returning to the United States, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her first Hollywood film ( The Embers of Violence ) , posed for Playboy and received roles in blaxploitation films. She became the highest paid female entertainer in Las Vegas and was married to Feliciano "Butch" Tavares of the soul group Tavares between 1971 and 1975 . In addition to her film roles, she has guest roles on various television series and has appeared as a prominent guest star on television shows such as the Muppet Show and Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show ; at Carson she was invited as a guest a total of 17 times between 1970 and 1978.

She contracted multiple sclerosis and was partially paralyzed, but overcame the disease in 1987 and was considered cured. However, the disease returned in 1996, after which she withdrew from show business. She returned to Philadelphia to live with her parents and adopted the Roman Catholic faith. In the film Mary's Land she appears as an interviewee and tells about her illness and her beliefs.
