The 110th Tour of Lombardy 2016 was an Italian one-day road bike race in Lombardy . It took place on September 29, 2012 and started in Bergamo and ended in Lecco after a distance of 251 km. It was the penultimate race of the 2012 UCI WorldTour . The very steep climb Muro di Sormano returned to the route after a 50-year absence and was before the climb to Madonna del Ghisallo . Joaquim Rodríguez won the race after a solo push, which he initiated about ten kilometers from the finish on the last climb of the day. He was the first Spaniard to win this classic . He relegated Olympic champions Samuel Sánchez and Rigoberto Urán to places two and three.
In the “Race of the Falling Leaves”, as we often call the Tour of Lombardy , favorite Alberto Contador , who had recently won the Tour of Spain , was in good shape for a long time. In the closing stages, however, the Spaniard was unable to counter the attack by his compatriot Joaquim Rodríguez . World champion Philippe Gilbert from Belgium ended the race early after falling around 20 kilometers from the finish.
