Lorenz Adalbert Enzinger
Lorenz Adalbert Enzinger (born April 22, 1849 in Wasserburg am Inn ; † May 5, 1897 in Falkenstein im Taunus ) was a German inventor and entrepreneur who became known in 1878 for the invention of a beer filter .
Life
Lorenz A. Enzinger is the second child of the Rimsting- born brewer Joann Baptist Enzinger and his wife Franziska, widowed Lueginger. Franziska brought the Lueginger brewery into the marriage. In 1853 the Enzinger brewery was the largest of the 15 Wasserburger breweries with 300 m 3 . Lorenz grew up in Wasserburg and began training in his parents' brewery after graduating from trade school. After further training at the brewing school in Augsburg in 1870, he returned shortly to Wasserburg.
Since 1873 Enzinger has held courses for budding beer brewers at the agricultural school of Dr. Heinrich Konrad Schneider in Worms , where he was entrusted with the project of an experimental brewery. Here he met Minna Rüdiger, whom he married on September 19, 1874. After working as a brewery technician at the Union Brewery in Neukölln (today: Berlin ), he became technical director of the Herberts & Co. brewery in Dortmund . However, after the birth of their first son in 1876, the family returned to Worms. As a result of an unsuccessful participation in the Stuckle machine factory, in which he was head of the laboratory, he lost his entire stake and left after just one year.
He wrote several publications and continued to teach at the Brewery Academy in Worms. Spurred on by the efficiency of the beer filter he developed, he founded the LA Enzinger company in 1879 , which he managed until his death in 1897.
Development of the beer filter
Lorenz Adalbert Enzinger became known for the invention of a beer filter, which he marketed under the name "Enzinger's Universal Schnellfilter". The turbid liquid passed through a series of paper filters and lost the turbidity it carried with it. In the filtration of beer yeast particles the filter held back what the beer made more durable and thus made it possible to transport it over long distances. This was a revolutionary innovation. Although large breweries use different types of filters today, smaller breweries still use the Enzinger.Filter, albeit somewhat optimized.
The first model of the beer filter was created on the Enzinger family's kitchen stove. The frame and filter were made from iron by the Hamm company in Frankenthal after Enzinger had cut the first prototypes out of hard rubber by hand with a fretsaw. After successful tests in the test brewery in Worms, Enzinger produced a larger model with the dimensions 50 × 50 × 150 (W × D × H). In 1878 the first model was sold and patent protection in Germany was announced. In the following year Lorenz Adalbert Enzinger founded his own company. The filter was successfully applied for a patent at the Imperial Patent Office in 1879 with patent specification 5159. Enzinger presented the filter in 1880 at the Munich brewery conference. The company, which initially produced in the urban area of Worms, had to be relocated to Pfeddersheim in 1883 on the converted Wiesenmühle site in order to expand . The thousandth filter was delivered in 1886. The entrepreneur also documented his economic success with the construction of a representative villa, the Villa Enzinger in Worms.
Company history
After the death of the company founder, the company was renamed Filter- und Brautechnische Maschinenfabrik Act.Ges. renamed and later merged to Enzinger Union Werke AG Mannheim . After a number of mergers, today KHS GmbH is the successor company.
