Lorenz Chrysanth (Edler) von Vest (born November 18, 1776 in Klagenfurt , † December 15, 1840 in Graz ) was an Austrian doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Vest ".

Live and act

Lorenz Chrysanth von Vest was the son of the doctor Lorenz Chrysanth Edler von Vest (1720–1789), who was raised to the nobility because of his services. He received his training first in Klagenfurt and then attended high school in Salzburg . He began his medical studies in Vienna in 1795 and continued in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1797 , where he received his doctorate in medicine in March 1798. During his studies in Freiburg he wrote several freedom songs, for which he was arrested in Vienna in autumn 1798 and sentenced to lifelong military service. Due to the good relations of his family, he was released from military service in 1800.

After his return to Klagenfurt in March 1800 he settled there as a doctor and gained a good reputation, especially as an ophthalmologist. In 1804 he married and became professor of medicine at the Klagenfurt Lyceum . At the request of Archduke Johann , he became professor of botany and chemistry at the newly founded Joanneum Graz in 1812 . In 1829 he was appointed Gubernialrat and Provincial Protomedicus of Styria . In this function he earned services for the reorganization of the pharmacy, improvement of hygiene, establishment of an institution for the deaf and dumb, introduction of the smallpox vaccination, organization of midwifery, an improved cemetery order. In 1833/34 he was rector of the University of Graz.

He is best known as an author through the two botanical writings Manuale botanicum (1805) and Instructions for a thorough study of botany (1815). But he also wrote contributions for the Medicinische Jahrbuch the imperial-royal Austrian state and the annals of physics . From 1821 he was co-editor of the Steiermärkische Zeitschrift .

Honors

In his honor was the genus Vestia Willd. named from the plant family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). In Graz, the Lorenz-Vest-Weg in Liebenau is named after him.
