Lorenz Kellhuber (born March 11, 1990 in Munich ) is a German jazz pianist and composer .

Career

The son of two church musicians, Lorenz Kellhuber grew up in Endorf near Regensburg . From 1995 he received classical piano training at the University for Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg , where he was accepted as a young student in 2001. From 2003 on, Kellhuber attended piano lessons from Franz Massinger in Munich. In 2004 he was discovered by the pianist Rob Bargad and introduced to jazz style intensively. In 2006, Kellhuber passed the highly gifted examination and became a bachelor's student at the Jazz Institute Berlin , where Kurt Rosenwinkel , Hubert Nuss , Greg Cohen and John Hollenbeck were among his lecturers. During his studies he went to New York for some time to refine his game with Aaron Goldberg and Fred Hersch . In 2010, Kellhuber finished his studies in Berlin.

In 2011 he founded the Lorenz Kellhuber Trio with Arne Huber on bass and Gabriel Hahn on drums. The first joint album People and Their Oppositions was released in March 2012 on Konnex Records . In April 2012, the Berlin music label Blackbird Music discovered him, where his second trio album Cosmos was released in March 2013 . State of Mind followed in May 2015 . In spring 2014 Kellhuber formed a second trio, the Lorenz Kellhuber Standard Experience , with the musicians Orlando le Fleming (bass) and Obed Calvaire (drums). In November 2015 they released their first album together, The Brooklyn Session . Parallel to his appearances in the trio, Kellhuber has been drawing attention to himself since 2012 with freely improvised solo concerts. In October 2017 he released his first solo album, Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival . With Samadhi , Kellhuber released the first album of his new trio with Felix Henkelhausen on bass and Moritz Baumgärtner on drums at the end of 2019 .

Kellhuber has been a guest at international festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival , the Basel Jazz Festival , the Getxo Jazz Festival, the Alto Adige Jazz Festival, the Burghausen Jazz Week and Bluetone . He played with musicians such as Al Porcino , TS Monk , Ed Partyka , Kurt Rosenwinkel, Adrian Mears , Ignaz Dinné and Johannes Enders . He can also be heard on albums by the collaborative quartet Radar and with Tobias Meinhart .

Awards

In 2009, Kellhuber received the Best Soloist Award at the Getxo Jazz Festival in Bilbao, Spain. In 2014 he became the first German musician to win the Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition. Kellhuber received the Culture Prize of the City of Regensburg in 2015.
