Life

Louis Riedel was born as the son of the secret medical council and district physician Th. Riedel. He attended the Wilhelm Wieprechts boys' school from 1856 to 1861 and the König-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Berlin from 1861 to 1867 , where he passed his Abitur . On April 15, 1867, he joined the Navy as a cadet . He completed his basic training on the sailing frigate Gefion and then received further training on the sailing frigate Niobe , the smooth-deck corvettes SMS Augusta and SMS Victoria as well as in the main division of the Baltic Fleet until he attended naval school. After successfully attending the naval school, Riedel served in the Baltic Sea main division and the 1st Sailor Division and as an officer on watch on the brig SMS Musquito . As a sub-lieutenant at sea (since December 16, 1871) and company officer, he was transferred from October 11, 1872 to the ship's boy division for half a year. He was then an officer on watch on the brig SMS Rover before he attended the Naval Academy from October 5, 1874, where he graduated from the 1st and 2nd Coetus. Between the training blocks, Riedel, who had been promoted to lieutenant in the sea on January 16, 1875 , was deployed as a watch officer on the SMS Hansa tank corvette from May 19 to November 4, 1875 .

From October 1, 1880 to October 3, 1884, Lieutenant Captain (from December 17, 1878) Riedel was a teacher at the Naval Academy. One of his students was Prince Heinrich . In 1884 Riedel took part in the landing battle in Cameroon and in 1888/89 on the east coast of Africa . As first officer on the Olga , he led the landing forces against Cameroon. From October 1, 1886 to September 30, 1888, Riedel was again a teacher at the Naval Academy. He then embarked on the journey to Dar es Salaam on the Aviso SMS Pfeil and was there in command of the gunboat SMS Möve . With this ship Riedel was involved in the defense of the station and mission of Dar es Salaam, the bombardment and burning of Saalam, and the capture of Tanga on July 10, 1889. On November 2, 1889, Riedel was dismissed from this post and was appointed department commander in the Second Sailor Division at home. From May 1 to September 25, 1891, Riedel was in command of the Aviso SMS Zieten , then received command of the coastal armored ship SMS Siegfried and then on April 1, 1892 of the ship boy training ship SMS Nixe . There he was promoted to captain at sea on October 24, 1892 . Due to the climate, he contracted a serious illness that forced him to submit his departure . It was therefore made available to the chief of the North Sea naval station from April 1 to May 14, 1894 .

By cabinet order of May 14, 1894, with the approval of his request, he was put up for disposition and continued to serve as President of the Ship Survey Commission of the North Sea Naval Station. From this position Riedel was given the character of Rear Admiral and finally retired on April 6, 1901.

After his departure he took up residence in Lübeck. He was a member of the Lübeck branch of the German Fleet Association and an honorary member of the Navy Association. He worked several years in the Patriotic Women's Association of the Red Cross and worked for several years Chairman of Lübeck Medical columns from the Red Cross . He dedicated himself to the organization and training of the cooperative of voluntary nurses during the war . In recognition of his unselfish work, he was awarded the Red Cross medal a few weeks before his death . As an officer in the Imperial Navy in Africa , he made the knowledge he had acquired while meeting various ethnic groups available to the Lübeck Museum of Ethnology .

On March 13th Riedel was buried in the Lübeck Gottesacker .
