The Lowari Pass , also called Lowari Top , has a summit height of 3,120 meters and overcomes the Hinduraj Mountains between the two districts of Chitral and Upper Dir in the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa .
This mountain range separates the access to the Chitral district. The pass is impassable for vehicles from November to May due to the snow. However, people cross this pass even in winter and deaths occur. The pass with the lowest pass height in this region offers the shortest route to Chitral ; However, it is only accessible with off-road vehicles. The Chitral district can only be reached via four mountain passes or from Afghanistan via the Kunar valley . The other passes are the Dorah Pass and Broghol Pass which lead into the Wakhan Corridor into Afghanistan and the Shandur Pass which leads to Gilgit in Pakistan.
On the side of Chitral live the Ashret and on the other side the Gujjars , who speak different language dialects. In 1954 there was an accident when a plane in which the Mehtar ("King of Chitral") was sitting and was killed when it crashed near the pass.
The 8.6-kilometer Lowari tunnel has been under construction since 2005, which should enable winter-safe access to the Chitral district from spring 2010. Due to many political, planning and technical difficulties as well as cost problems, a completion date for March 2014 was announced. Another completion date was announced in August 2014 for October 2017.
