Luc Urbain du Bouëxic, comte de Guichen (born June 21, 1712 in Fougères , France , † January 13, 1790 in Morlaix , France) was a French count and admiral .

Life

In 1730 he joined the French Navy , made his first experiences in the fight against the British Navy during the War of the Austrian Succession and the King George's Wars with a French convoy and was awarded the Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis in 1748 . During the Seven Years 'War in North America he took part in the unsuccessful relief of Louisbourg in 1755 and became captain at the beginning of the Seven Years' War in Europe in 1756 . A year later, as the commander of a frigate, he captured four British privateers and nine merchant ships.

In 1776 de Guichen was promoted to Rear Admiral. During the American War of Independence , he first took part in the naval battle of Ouessant as a squadron commander in 1778 and in 1779 became Lieutenant-General and Vice-Admiral Commander-in-Chief of the important war port of Brest . In 1780, de Guichen replaced Admiral Charles Henri d'Estaing as Commander in Chief of the fleet and asserted himself in the Caribbean against the British Royal Navy under Admiral Rodney in three consecutive naval battles (including in April 1780 at Martinique ). Back in Brest, he blocked the British canal fleet in Torbay for six weeks the following year , but could not convince the Spanish admiral Luis de Córdova , who had joined him in 1781, to attack the British at anchor. Then de Guichen led a large merchant fleet from Brest through a second sea battle at Ouessant to the Antilles, in 1782 he again took command in Brest. In June 1782 he set sail with 18 warships, united in Cadiz with a Spanish auxiliary fleet and took part in the siege of Gibraltar. After the Peace of Paris , de Guichen took his leave and in 1784 became a Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit . Since 1785 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society .

Since then, the French Navy has repeatedly named various ships after de Guichen.
