Lucia Ronchetti (born February 3, 1963 in Rome ) is an Italian composer who works with modern music-theatrical forms.

Life

Lucia Ronchetti grew up as the second youngest child in an extended family in a Roman suburb. At an early age, she received informal music lessons from a neighbor, a composer and violinist, which she incorporated into her work La stanza degli orologi in frantumi in 1988 . She composed musical fragments, of which only the composition Quartetto (1979–1980) was completed.

Influenced by the composition Aura by Bruno Maderna , she studied piano , composition and electronic music at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and the Corsi Internazionali de Città di Castello from 1981 and then humanities at the University of La Sapienza . In 1987 she completed her studies with a dissertation on the compositions of Bruno Maderna.

In Paris she attended composition seminars with Gerard Grisey and took part in an annual IRCAM course (1997). She obtained a Diplôme d'Études Approfondies (DEA) and received her PhD in musicology from the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes at the Sorbonne in 1999 under the direction of François Lesure . In her work she dealt with the orchestral work of Ernest Chausson , in particular the influence of Richard Wagner on French composers.

In 2005, she accepted an invitation from Tristan Murail as a Fulbright visiting professor at the Department of Music at Columbia University in New York . Lucia Ronchetti was composer in residence at institutions such as the International Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia ( Bamberg ), Yaddo ( Saratoga Springs , NY), the Stuttgart State Theaters , the MacDowell Colony ( Peterborough , New Hampshire, USA), the Akademie Schloss Solitude ( Stuttgart ) and the Werdenberg Castle ( Werdenberg , Switzerland). The composer works with various musical theatrical forms. Her work ranges from operas and chamber operas for professional singers and musicians to choral operas for ensembles with amateur choirs to music-theatrical experiments without a stage.

From 1998 she realized various composition projects in collaboration with Folkmar Hein at the TU Berlin. Since 2003 she has been working with the experimental studio of the SWR in Freiburg, which resulted in Xylocopa violacea .

Lucia Ronchetti has also worked intensively on compositions for vocal music, especially in collaboration with the Neue Vokalsolisten from Stuttgart. This collaboration resulted in , among others: Hamlet's Mill , Pinocchio , Last Desire and Hombre de mucha gravedad.

From 2012 to 2015, as part of a co-production by the Semperoper Dresden and the Opernhaus Halle , she staged a music theater project that spanned several seasons: Contrascena, Sub-Plot and Mise en abyme.

Her opera Esame di mezzanotte, based on a libretto by Ermanno Cavazzoni , was named “World Premiere of 2015” in the critics' survey of the specialist magazine Opernwelt .

According to her critics, Lucia Ronchetti strives for a “total work of art” consisting of musical craftsmanship, extravagant art of writing and quoting, and intellectuality in her compositions. Her style is shaped by the examination of works from bygone eras and various genres and is understood in the context of these.
