The Ludwig-Leichhardt-Gymnasium is a secondary school in the independent city of Cottbus ( Brandenburg ). The high school offers instruction in the Japanese language and student exchange programs with schools in Japan, Canada and Australia.

History and name

The building was erected in the 1970s during the GDR era on the decision of the City Council of Cottbus . In 1975 the Salvador-Allende -Oberschule was inaugurated as the 22nd high school in the east wing of the building , in the west the Pablo-Neruda -Oberschule as the 23rd polytechnic high school of the city of Cottbus. Both institutions together formed the Cottbus Polytechnic School . In 1991 both schools were converted into the fourth Cottbus grammar school. A closure was averted in 2006.

Since 1996 the school has been officially named "Ludwig-Leichhardt-Gymnasium" in honor of the Australian researcher Ludwig Leichhardt . In 2004 a Ludwig-Leichhardt-Galerie was set up in the basement of the grammar school and opened to the general public in 2012. In November 2013, a cooperation agreement between Henley High School in Adelaide, Australia and Ludwig-Leichhardt-Gymnasium was signed in Cottbus .

Buildings and surroundings

The main building of the school was built using a panel construction. Lessons take place in the two three-story wings of the building; the school administration is housed in a two-story intermediate building. On the approximately 2 hectare school grounds there is a gymnasium and a modern sports facility with a tartan surface next to the main building .

Lesson focus and school life

The school is one of the few in Germany where Japanese can be learned as a foreign language from a Japanese teacher.

Student exchange programs have existed since 1996 with the Omiya High School in Japanese Omiya Saitama and since 2001 with the Luther College in Canada Saskatchewan . After the natural and environmental disaster in Japan in 2011, students and parents of the Ludwig-Leichhardt-Gymnasium collected more than 60,000 euros in donations for the victims in Japan.

Particular emphasis is placed on sports and the natural sciences. For example, there are working groups for football , basketball , volleyball and table tennis as well as nature conservation and IT . In 2003 and 2012 the grammar school was named the “Most Sporty School in the State of Brandenburg”.

The school supports the integration of physically handicapped students. For this reason there is, among other things, a barrier-free building access and an elevator as well as community service providers and a sports teacher for disabled sports at the school.

In the school year 2007/08, the grammar school was a project participant in the funding program Brandenburger Antike-Denkwerk of the University of Potsdam with the topic clothing in antiquity and was awarded first prize at the program’s student congress in July 2008.

Media award

  • In September 2013, the Ludwig-Leichhardt-school student Lisa won Koinzer with her film A blank slate to be in the student category the RTL Com.mit Award , a Media Prize for Integration. The film shows an unusual way in which conflicts between different cultures can be resolved at school.

  • 2011/12: European Sport Festival , Youth Trained for the Olympics , Vattenfall School Cup
