Ludwig Beckmann (also: Ludwig Konrad Beckmann and Conrad Ludwig Beckmann ; * February 21, 1822 in Hanover ; † January 8, 1902 in Lohausen near Düsseldorf ) was a German painter .

Life

Ludwig Konrad Beckmann was the son of a wagon manufacturer and initially learned the profession of wagon builder at the request of his parents. As a result, he wrote a book about this business, which saw several editions.

However, his interest in hunting soon determined him to devote himself to painting animals. At the same time he made anatomical and zoological studies.

He settled in Düsseldorf, where he created a number of good oil paintings , preferably on behalf of English art lovers , including successful boar and bear hunts. He also provided numerous illustrations for books such as Brehms Tierleben and magazines, for which he occasionally wrote the text himself, including for Die Gartenlaube .

Beckmann was also active as a writer and published Reinke Fuchs (Düsseldorf 1856) and under the pseudonym Revierförster Holster Jagd humoresken (e.g. Idiotismus venatorius , Düsseldorf 1858).

The Thieme-Becker lexicon of artists states: “As a cynologist Beckmann was an authority of the first order.” His main interest (like that of Jean Bungartz ) was the English races, while Richard Strebel gave more weight to the German races in his works. Beckmann's main cynological work is the two-volume history and description of the breeds of the dog , which appeared in 1894/1895.
