Ludwig Philipp (born November 23, 1602 in Heidelberg ; † January 8, 1655 in Crossen ) was the son of Elector Frederick IV and younger brother of the "Winter King" Frederick V and after his death in 1632 guardian of the Elector and Administrator of the Electoral Palatinate.

Youth portrait of Ludwig Philipp von Simmern

According to his father's will, the younger brother of Frederick V received the town of Simmern , the Sponheim area and the principality of Pfalz-Simmern , which, however, had to revert to the electoral line after an agreement of 1653. Ludwig Philipp followed his brother to Bohemia and held the prince-bishopric of Breslau for a short time until the battle of the White Mountain.

Although Emperor Ferdinand II had recognized his innocence in the Bohemian adventure, his lands were occupied by the Spaniards. The intervention of the Swedes in the Thirty Years War brought him back Simmern and the appointment as Swedish administrator of the Electoral Palatinate, but he had to retire to Frankenthal and Sedan in 1634 after the Swedish defeat at Nördlingen . Ludwig Philipp was only reinstated in his country following the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia .

Ludwig Philipp was accepted into the Fruitful Society in 1624 as "The Dangerous One" . After he returned to his royal seat in Kaiserslautern in 1646 , he accepted 14 members into the Fruitful Society.
