The Ludwig Prandtl is a German research ship that was specially built for use in shallow water areas (estuaries, coastal areas such as the Wadden Sea areas in the North Sea and the lagoon waters in the Baltic Sea ). The ship belongs to the Helmholtz Center Geesthacht - Center for Materials and Coastal Research and run by the F. Laeisz shipping company bereedert . The ship is named after the German physicist Ludwig Prandtl .
construction
The Ludwig Prandtl was built in 1982/1983 under the construction number 234 at the Heinrich Grube shipyard in Hamburg for the Helmholtz Center Geesthacht. The keel was laid on July 1, 1982, the launch on April 25, 1983. The ship was completed in May 1983. In 2002 the ship was extended.
drive
The ship is propelled by two twelve - cylinder four-stroke diesel engines from the manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus AG (type: D 2842 LE) with an output of 365 kW each , which act on two rudder propellers . The ship reaches a speed of 12 knots . It also has a bow thruster designed as a pump jet .
equipment
The ship is equipped for research with a hydraulic folding crane , a single conductor winch and a towing device for measuring devices. There is a laboratory on board . The ship is mainly used for one-day research trips in the coastal area.
