Ludwig Stein (philosopher)
Ludwig Stein (born November 12, 1859 in Erdö-Bénye , Austrian Empire ; died July 13, 1930 in Salzburg ) was a Hungarian - Swiss philosopher , sociologist , rabbi , publicist and pacifist .
Life
Ludwig Stein studied philosophy at the universities of Berlin and Halle and also trained as a rabbi. From 1881 to 1883 he lived as a rabbi in Berlin and from 1883 to 1886 as a journalist there . In 1886 he was appointed private lecturer in philosophy at the Zurich Polytechnic and the University of Zurich . From 1891 to 1909 he was a full professor of philosophy at the University of Bern , where he also regularly offered courses in sociology . Among his listeners were Walter Rathenau , Leo Trotsky , Rosa Luxemburg , Anna Tumarkin , Cay Lorenz von Brockdorff and Karl Radek . In 1893 he received Swiss citizenship . In 1909 he organized the 7th International Congress for Sociology of the Institut International de Sociologie in Bern.
From 1909 Stein lived again in Berlin as a political journalist and political advisor. There he advised the former Chancellor Bernhard von Bülow, among others . In 1914 he and the politician Ernst Bassermann founded the Wednesday Society (not to be confused with the Berlin Wednesday Society, which had existed since 1863 ). He was a member of the standing committee of the International Peace Bureau and promoted pacifist ideas. After the First World War , which he spent in Germany, he took part in the peace conferences in Geneva and Rapallo and took a mediating position.
He was co-founder and editor of the Archive for the History of Philosophy and the Archive for Systematic Philosophy and Sociology , as well as the editor of the magazine Nord und Süd as well as the Vossische Zeitung and the Berliner Zeitung .
