Ludwig Weninger: Self-Portrait (1920s)

Ludwig Weninger (* 1904 in Gunzenhausen ; † April 12, 1945 in Gaibach ) was a German painter of the New Objectivity . He is considered an important student of Hans Hofmann .

Life

Ludwig Weninger was born in Gunzenhausen ( Middle Franconia ) in 1904. After attending secondary school in Würzburg , he began studying philosophy , literature and art history in Munich . In 1925 he made a transition to the fine arts . After a stay in Italy , he entered the "School of Fine Arts, Hans Hofmann" in Munich. From 1927 to 1929 he worked as a painter and set designer at the Bavarian State Theater . He then completed artistic training with Emil Preetorius in the theater class at the School of Applied Arts in Munich and, as a freelance painter, was a member of the Munich artist group “Die Juryfrei”. From 1929 he took part in exhibitions in Hof and Munich. His pictures combine expressionistic will to express themselves with the simplification of modern objects. In addition to oil paintings, watercolors and portrait drawings occupy a large space. From 1932 he was assistant to Hans Hofmann and after his emigration in the same year he continued to run the Hofmann School together with Hans Hofmann's wife until the school was closed by the National Socialists in 1933.

On April 12, 1945, Ludwig Weninger officially fell as a sergeant in the Air Force in Gaibach ( Mainfranken ). According to contemporary witness reports, he was shot by an American soldier at the Öttershausen estate while fleeing from approaching US troops . His grave is in the northwest corner of the Gaibach cemetery and is decorated with a wrought-iron cross. In 1994 his works, believed to have been destroyed since the Second World War, were rediscovered in an attic in Wasserburg am Inn in Upper Bavaria . His estate is looked after by his biographer, the Magdeburg journalist Jochen Müller.
