Ludwig Ballhorn (full name Ludwig Wilhelm Ballhorn and Ludovicus Guilielmus Balhorn as well as several name variants * March 15, 1730 in Quickborn , † May 30, 1777 in Neustadt am Rübenberge ) was a German school principal , superintendent and author .

Life

Ludwig Wilhelm Ballhorn was born into the Ballhorn (Rosen) family, which can trace its origins back to the time of the Reformation . He was a son of the preacher Achaz Ludwig Ballhorn, who was active in Quickborn in Holstein and who was later appointed provost of Ütersen and consistorial assessor of Pinneberg . He was related to Philipp Melanchthon through his mother Maria Elisabeth, née Gödecke .

After his first school lessons by private teachers, Ballhorn attended the learned school of the Johanneum in Hamburg from 1744 , and the local grammar school from 1749. In the minor subjects he studied geometry and science as well as music, for which he was taught as a composer by the Italian Filippo Finazzi . From 1751 Ballhorn attended the University of Jena , became a member of the Latin Society there and in 1754 its secretary.

After his return to Pinneberg at Easter 1755, he taught the children of the Hennings State Council there as a private tutor , but was appointed director of the Harburg school in 1766 . Around three years later, in 1759, he moved to Hanover as director of the local lyceum , which he led to a hitherto unimagined prosperity.

On December 15, 1763, the University of Rinteln made him an honorary doctorate in philosophy, but Ballhorn placed little value on this title.

In 1774 Ballhorn moved to Neustadt am Rübenberge , where he took up the position of senior pastor and superintendent of the city. Only a little later he turned down the call as professor of theology at the University of Kiel. He delivered his last sermon on Whit Monday, 1777, before he died shortly afterwards on May 30th of that year.

Ballhorn was married to Christina Maria Magdalena Ballhorn, née Wolkenhaar or Wolckenhaar. With the later supervisor at the Hoftöchterschule in Hanover, also known as Christine Ballhorn , he had the son Friedrich Ernst Ballhorn-Rosen as the second son and third of four surviving children from his marriage. Through him he became the grandfather of the orientalist and Sanskritist Friedrich August Rosen , until 1817 called Friedrich Ballhorn.
