Ludwig von Hörnigk (1600–1667)

Ludwig von Hörnigk (born March 16, 1600 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 2, 1667 Mainz ; also written as Hörnigk or Horneck ) was a German doctor, lawyer and author. His father is said to be Ludwig V of Hessen-Darmstadt .

Life

His family is said to be from Darmstadt. Before studying, he learned Hebrew from the Preceptor Julius Konrad Otto in Frankfurt in 1618 . Hörnigk studied medicine with Gregor Horstius in Giessen . Then he went to Padua in Italy, where he studied with Adriaan van den Spiegel . He then obtained his doctorate in medicine in Strasbourg . On June 1, 1625 he became a doctor in Frankfurt am Main. In 1626 he was awarded the title of Comes palatinus in Prague , which went hand in hand with his rise in rank. In 1635 he became a physicus ordinarius in Frankfurt. With his paper Medicaster Apella , printed in Strasbourg in 1631 , he denigrated Jewish doctors working in Frankfurt and also attacked their patients by name. In 1638 he received his doctorate in law in Marburg . He becomes one of the earliest German administrative lawyers.

In 1643 he was an overseer in the preparation of the Theriac , and he claims to have recognized a fraud by the pharmacists. This also happened in a pamphlet. On June 10, 1643, he lost supervision to his colleagues Weikard and Peter de Spina III. and first becomes the overseer of the hospitals. In October 1643 he was released after throwing the terminally ill Theobald Krafft into the street and not paying the fine for it.

He becomes the council of the Counts of Solms in Rödelheim , as well as their bailiff and doctor. But soon he was in a dispute with the clergy, a process dragged on to the imperial councilor. In 1647 he also went here and came to Vienna via Mainz , where he also converted to Catholicism. A step that has divided him and many of his friends and family. In 1650 he came to Mainz and became dean of the medical faculty. In 1655 he is back in Frankfurt as Imperial Councilor and Kurmainzer Council. From 1658 to 1659 he was rector of the University of Mainz . He stayed at the university until his death.

Works

According to the judgment of historians, like many doctors of his time, he is distinguished by his learned erudition, blind faith in authority and trust in formulas that work miracles, and a lack of knowledge of anatomy and physiology are replaced by idioms.
