The church on Lueg

Lueg is a group and district of Gries am Brenner .

Name customer

The name is etymologically associated with luech ('hole', cf. Lueg ) and memorably describes the geographical nature of the terrain where the two valley flanks narrow and the last ascent to the Brenner Pass has to be mastered.

history

Lueg is located on the north-south connection, which has been important since ancient times, and which leads over the Brenner Pass. In the Middle Ages, one of the most important trade and military routes of the Holy Roman Empire, the Via imperii , ran through the area .

Originally there was a cave castle at the Lueg , which later developed into a festival. In the 13th century it was owned by the Lords of Tarant and Dornsberg, who were loyal followers of the Tyrolean sovereign in the fight against the Bishop of Brixen . Due to the peace treaty of 1241 between Count Albert von Tirol and the Brixen bishop Egno von Eppan , the facility had to be demolished. The bottleneck was subsequently fortified again and again and gained strategic importance several times.

On Lueg also one of the most important was customs-houses of the medieval Tyrol . Since 1287 it was the most profitable customs post in Tyrol, in 1778 it was even elevated to a higher customs office and only closed in 1815. While the castle-like customs office building was destroyed as early as 1809 by order of Marshal Lefebvre , only a chapel and the widum are evidence of the former customs office . The chapel on the Lueg was extensively restored in the 1990s.

Lueg is the namesake for the Luegbrücke of the Brenner Autobahn , which runs on the slope above the village.
